Two new bridges were required to connect recent construction east of the Overijssel Kanaal in Deventer to the city centre.

The Bolkestein bridge serves motorized traffic. Cyclists and pedestrians use the adjacent drawbridge. Traffic research changed the original concept of two double car lanes into one going into town and three going out. This caused the original symmetrical design to tilt to one side. The main arch is situated in the slit between both bridge decks. Inclined, to carry the widest deck, assisted by a smaller side arch. The one lane deck is cantilevered.

At the Snipperling bridge the separation of traffic is pushed even further. Two concrete bridges accommodate cars, next to a steel span for slower traffic. Also here both decks are carried by a slanted arch in the void between.

In both bridges tension bars counteract the splaying forces in the arches. The rods penetrate the cross beams through holes in the middle flange, where steel can be missed.
