Bridge Eilandbrug
Kampen 1994-2003

Main span 150 meter
Total length 400 meter
Commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat

Extension of the local highway N50 between Zwolle in the East of the Netherlands and Emmeloord in the IJsselmeer Polders required construction of a new bridge across the IJssel near the town of Kampen. Traffic crossing this border between old and newly created land now meets a striking landmark in the shape of this cable bridge.

The rarefied construction complies with the brief to provide a fixed bridge to accommodate river barges that need a minimal 36 feet above the highest water level, and a bascule bridge to allow passage of the recreational fleet with standing masts. In addition, the pastoral surroundings demanded an autonomous, slender object. With a 300 feet tall pylon that carries a main span of 450 feet, this cable bridge provides the answer.

With a total length of 1260 feet the bridge hovers over the flat landscape. The counterweight is not hidden in a concrete bunker, but clearly visible.
