Bicycle bridge over Highway A2
Amsterdam 1999-2003

Total length bridge 154,5 meters
Main span 35 meters
Commissioned by Grondbedrijf Amsterdam

In the regional bicycle network around Amsterdam one connection was missing between the South-western extension and the village of Ouderkerk. Over the years highway A2 between Amsterdam and Utrecht had grown in size to become an almost insurmountable barrier. This flyover with a total length of almost 500 feet provides the missing link.

The main supporting construction consists of three interconnected hollow concrete joints that together create a curved plane underneath. At both sides this curve smoothly blends into aluminium wings that support the edge of the level road surface. Stretch metal screens, bending inward, define the railing. Together, concrete and steel create a vast span that looks thin at the edge.

The existing illumination of the highway is sufficient for the safety of cyclists on the bridge. Supporting piers feature cast-in light fixtures that eliminate shadows underneath the bridge, creating an agreeable environment 24 hours a day.
