A highway separates the residential neighborhood Amstelwijck in Dordrecht from the schools to which children cycle every day. Until recently this connection was long, complicated and therefore quite dangerous. A bicycle bridge crossing the highway shortened the trip between home and school and made the bike ride a lot more pleasant.

Ramps on both sides of the highway gently lead bikes and scooters to the bridge level. There a concrete slab spans the road, supported in the middle by a buttress. The bicycle lane is protected on both sides by green tinted curved glass plates. This transparency assures that car drivers and bike riders, though separated, still are aware of each other.

Cycling students are protected from the wind and turbulences from trucks passing underneath the overpass are also effectively eliminated. The lighting suspended over the middle of the highway crosses the bridge at a level high enough to make additional illumination superfluous.
