Cycle viaduct
Uden 2003-2007

Project for a bicycle bridge in Uden.
Length and main span 37 meters
Commissioned by Province of North Brabant

Highways are not only national connections, but also local barriers. Route A50's Uden exit in the south of Holland provided a better link for motorized vehicles but divided the town in two for cyclists. A bike bridge provides a safe solution for slow-moving traffic above and creates a Gateway for Uden for cars underneath. A gateway that is never locked and always open. The approaching driveway features contemporary innovations like turbo roundabouts to replace traffic lights and whisper asphalt to eliminate noise.

The bridge is a slender family relation of the nearby viaduct that runs parallel over the highway exit. From land abutments covered with basalt stones two straddle-legged concrete piers support the roadway above. Round cast-in light fixtures illuminate the space under the bridge. Railings are supported by balusters with built-in lamps, helping the lonely biker to find his way to Uden by night
