One of the most attractive aspects of life in Amsterdam is being
able to buy a boat and experience the city from water level on your
own. This certainly applies to the newly developed residential area
in the Eastern Docklands, where houses are even closer to the water
than in the original centre of town. However, the available shoreline
is already occupied by house boats.
Even if they were turned a quarter to make more space, small boats
could not be accommodated.
In the former Railroad Basin, a floating jetty is home to 200 vessels.
Most of them are owned by local residents, so a neighbourhood watch
is guaranteed. The project is the happy result of a cooperation between
the local borough, a yacht club and a sailing school.
A simple arched bridge connects the jetty with the mainland. A metal
gate halfway opens for those who belong there and keeps all others
out. Less is impossible, more isn’t necessary.
