In the heart of the fishing village Scheveningen, close to The Hague,
a 14-floor apartment building was erected in the Sixties with little
attention paid to its urban context. Yet the flats are very popular
with senior citizens who are attached to the familiar surroundings
and splendid view of the harbour.
The design aims to not only renovate the individual apartments, but
also to update the elevators and install wind screens on the galleries
to make coming home more comfortable.
A residential care centre is situated next to the base of the building
to support independent living as long as possible. The new low-rise
follows the bend in the adjacent road. After 40 years the apartment
building has finally been linked to the urban fabric and contributes
to the upgrading of the whole harbour area. A planned restaurant on
the top floor will give everyone the opportunity to enjoy the panoramic
view.
