Meandering Tower House
Following a study tour to prefabricated houses from developer Joseph Eichler in and around San Francisco, ten architects, urban designers and landscape architects developed with clients, a detached prefab house for the Dutch Randstad, in which their experiences from America are processed.
In the land of unlimited possibilities, the United States, new housing be built can endlessly without any problems. In a small country like the Netherlands however, the landscape is almost full. In the US expandable bungalow houses, on often hilly terrain have always an interesting view or orientation. In the Netherlands, with much less space, we should try to remain the scarce open fields we have. Moreover, the Netherlands is flat, so if you want a nice view you need to build in height. This leads to the idea to design and build villas as compact towers. Because of their height, they have a nice orientation and with their compact footprint, the urban ensemble continues to stay airy.
Each floor has a residential function. This can be eating, sleeping, lounging, relaxing or working. The towers may have different heights depending on the number of functions needed of wished. The way in which the different functions or different floors are stacked differs per dwelling which also diversify the urban scheme. The main characteristics are a new organization of the home, a new spatiality in the neighbourhood and last but not least a stunning view.
