Sporenburg Office Building and Gym
At the head of a building block in de Eastern Docklands of Amsterdam a location was reserved for a gym serving three neighbourhood schools. The space required was insufficient to finish the block decently. Construction of a supplementary office would not only solve an architectural problem but at the same time supply appreciated additional working space in an area that has none, except at home.
On the outside the gym has a brick wall in style with the adjacent homes. A long strip of windows just below ceiling level extends seamlessly into the office curtain wall above, that comprises fixed panels and windows that are fixed or can be opened. Staircases at both sides are slightly recessed to accentuate the transition from the houses to the head of the block.
Solar load determines the percentage of glass outer surface. Fortunately, the grand view from the office on the Eastern Docklands is on the north side.
