Krispijn Sound Barrier
The residential neighbourhood Krispijn close to Dordrecht is situated near highway A16 between Rotterdam and Breda. Lowering noise levels and improving air quality was imperative since some housing estates here are as close as 30 feet to the road, and in some 700 apartments the noise level was way over acceptable standards. After a 300 metre separation the sound barrier of Wielwijk is followed by the barrier of Krispijn which was built 10 years later. The design of the second sound barrier is adapted to the Wielwijk sound barrier to create a continuous appearance when viewed from the highway.
A light construction of steel latticework and glass was placed on the retaining wall and fulfilled the request for maximum transparency on-site the residential area. The curved shape, the rhythm of the construction, details, materialization, connection to the motorway and escape doors of the Krispijn sound barrier are aligned with the Wielwijk sound barrier. For sections not directly located along the residential area, transparency was not a main necessity. Therefore, the slender contoured look of the bent concrete trusses is similar to the Wielwijk sound barrier construction. Sound barriers combined with a sophisticated planting scheme reduce both noise and air pollution.
