IJdoornlaan Amsterdam
Under the slogan compact city, Amsterdam is aiming to increase urban density. A study by the municipal Department of Urban Planning showed that this housing complex in the northern part of the city had to fulfill this aim. The outer two of five identical housing blocks were selected for a transformation.
The existing buildings turned out to be capable of supporting two lightweight stories on top. These consist of apartments reached by an outside gallery. Access is provided by elevators, incorporated in two slender eleven storey towers that adjoin the blind walls at the end of the block. Apartments in the whole complex were renovated.
The double penthouse addition is constructed from a wooden balloon frame with a flat aluminium cladding. This building method allows rapid assembly with minimal disturbance of residents below. Every gallery provides entry to 10 rental apartments. The towers at both ends each contain 19 apartments for sale, one of which, at ground level, is designated for a professional practice at home.
An additional 78 houses required 5,000 square feet of open space. That ’s compact indeed.
