Office Buildings Rietlandpark
For this area in the Eastern Docklands of Amsterdam the Department of Urban Planning called for freestanding, monolithical structures clad with metal sheets. The upper floors on the north side had to be set back to allow sunlight into the houses opposite. The south side was allowed an overhang as compensation.
The five buildings are arranged as two pairs and a soloist. This formation results in two broad avenues instead of four equally narrow spaces in between. Three vertical points of ascent link the entrances with the floors above and the parking garage that runs under the whole complex, which also serves a hotel and club nearby. Over the garage a raised ground level is covered with grass and planted with poplars.
The buildings keep an eye on the sunken tram stop, designed by Hans van Heeswijk Architects, at the crossing of the main roads Piet Heinkade and Panamakade. Looking like the metal frames on an assembled vehicle, they are well adapted to the dynamics of this traffic junction.
