Houthaven Bridges
This design concerns 14 new bridges in the Amsterdam Houthaven to be the urban links of the island structure. A comparison with Venice is appealing because of the similar connecting function to experience the city as a whole.
As in Venice, the bridges have a slightly curved shape to subtly accentuate the composition of islands. The car bridges are made of concrete and have a sheltering character. Benches on the bridges make them a place to enjoy the beautiful views over the canals and the IJ. The steel bicycle and pedestrian bridges have a long and narrow shape from a clear and light arc construction. To make them even slimmer in appearance, the steel structures are finished with dark lacquer. The road surface and the handrails are made of hardwood and a continuous white LED-line is included in the handrails. In this way, the natural materials, colours and refined details are highlighted.
