De Key Office
De Principaal, project developer for housing corporation Lieven de Key, moved into an office of the former Amsterdam Cattle Market in 1994. Custom made furniture formed part of the interior renovation. Desks made from six interconnected table tops were part of the design.
Two years later, the organization had grown and the Cattle Market premises became too cramped. Larger premises were found in another former industrial area in the Eastern Docklands. Here a hangar, built around 1900 for a shipping company provided ample space. The basic structure is filled in with glass partitions. Conference rooms line the outer wall. Daylight reaches the central office area. The same desks only had to be moved to their new position for work to continue.
The entire office has a wide view of the harbour area over a loading platform that now functions as a waterfront balcony. In the back, from the large round luncheon table, a newly constructed window offers a view of the entrance and the city beyond. As in a rear view mirror.
